When we talk about achieving a “naturally beautiful” face, we’re not just talking about erasing wrinkles or tightening skin. Real beauty—and youthfulness—comes from balanced, harmonious features that enhance what makes you unique. Let’s explore how we assess and enhance those contours, focusing on balanced proportions, central landmarks, and a few simple tips for unlocking your best look!
Finding Facial Balance through Contour Assessment
Getting the Ratios Right: The Upper, Middle, and Lower Face
First things first: let’s talk proportions.
We break the face into three main zones—the upper (forehead to eyebrows), middle (eyebrows to the base of the nose), and lower (base of the nose to the chin).
Ideally, these zones are in a balanced 1:1:1 ratio, but for many of my Korean clients, we find that a 1:1:0.8 ratio actually looks more balanced and youthful. Think of it as your own beauty recipe!
Finding Your Face’s “Anchor Point”
Next up, we look for what I like to call the “anchor point”—the feature that naturally draws the eye and grounds the face.
This varies for everyone, but it’s often the brow ridge, nose, or even the lips.
Once we identify this central landmark, we can assess how everything else is working together (or not!) around it. It’s like setting up the perfect focal point for a masterpiece!
Enhancing Contours: The Cheekbones and Jawline as Guideposts
With the proportions set and the anchor point identified, we dive into the three-dimensional planes of the face.
Using the cheekbones and jawline as guideposts, I look at how smooth and balanced these planes are. If an area looks a bit flat or sunken, a little volume boost—such as dermal fillers—can add dimension.
If there’s extra fullness or sagging, lifting and tightening treatments can refine and lift the area. It’s a bit like sculpting, except you’re the canvas.
Personalized Consultations: Uncovering Your Unique Balance
Many clients arrive with a specific concern in mind, but few have looked at their face from a full balance perspective. That’s why I always begin with a holistic consultation about facial balance and proportions. It’s my way of showing clients the beauty in their natural features, while also recommending enhancements that bring out that harmony even more.
Achieving that naturally youthful look is all about balance, harmony, and enhancing what makes you, well, you!
And with a little professional guidance, bringing out your best features can be both a science and an art.
